Tomorrow Begins a New Future December

December 27, 2019

Thanks to investment in research, a significant evolution has occurred in the treatment of cancer over the past twenty years. The life expectancy of patients increases from year to year, side effects are reduced, cancer is increasingly called a chronic disease, rather than a death sentence, the possibilities for treating many diseases are expanding every day. And even if a “magic pill” has not yet appeared (it’s not so simple!), that can instantly cure any patient with cancer, but new methods and drugs give great promise.

Over the past five years, the pace of change in cancer treatment has been staggering. A simple example: over the 60 years from 1940 to 2000, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 72 cancer drugs. And only in 2018, 19 new drugs were approved, while their quality has completely changed compared to the last century. In place of drugs that affect the entire body at all its levels, comes personalized medicine. New drugs have a targeted effect, their target is certain genes or molecules, they are easier to carry and cause much less side effects.

Thanks to the advent of new methods, the results in the treatment of advanced stages of cancer have improved even with such formidable diagnoses as melanoma, lung cancer, and kidney cancer. Even with advanced cases, survival rates increase.

A completely new weapon in the fight against cancer has appeared: immunotherapy. With its help, treatment becomes even more powerful. Unlike chemotherapy, which destroys cancer but also affects healthy cells, immunotherapy stimulates a person’s own immune system, causing it to destroy the disease. Tumors that previously did not respond at all to other types of treatment are reduced in size and often completely disappear.

It is known that the work of the immune system is to protect the body from enemies — viruses, bacteria, tumors. But cancer cells often become invisible to the immune system, and sometimes they make immune cells help, not harm tumors. Immunotherapy "trains" the body to find and destroy cancer cells. This is the newest tool for which the future belongs, and more and more new developments appear in this direction. Scientists are conducting research to understand all the nuances of such treatment and to discover new exciting opportunities that will make the situation forever change. But now we have a reason for optimism, because we have advanced in understanding the nature of cancer and the mechanisms that cause it.

LISOD doctors keep up to date and put into practice all promising methods, including immunotherapy drugs. This makes it possible for each patient individually to choose a treatment tactic that is more likely to help stop the disease and restore health. Thus, the methods of the future are effectively applied today and give results. And we are ready to say to each patient: “Never give up and do not give up. No one knows what medicine will appear tomorrow. Victory will certainly be on the patient’s side! ”
