Thyroid Cancer: What Should You Know?

September 13, 2019

What types of disease exist?

Researchers have identified four main types of thyroid cancer:

* Papillary. This tumor occurs most often - in 4 cases out of 5. It grows slowly, can metastasize to lymph nodes in the neck.

 * Follicular. The second most common type of cancer. May spread to lymph nodes and blood vessels.

* Medullary. It makes up to 5% of all cases. You can suspect a disease if calcitonin is elevated in the blood.

*Anaplastic thyroid cancer. A very rare disease, but the most aggressive. May metastasize to distant organs and tissues.

Who and when can get sick?

According to the National Cancer Register, among the most common oncopathologies in Ukraine, thyroid cancer is in 10th place in terms of the number of sick women. In men, this disease is less common.

Most often, thyroid cancer is diagnosed at the age of 40 to 70 years.

What are the symptoms?

At the onset of the disease, the patient may feel increased fatigue and weakness, loss of appetite, palpitations, irritability. Sleep disturbances, depression, hand tremors may occur. Often, weight decreases sharply or increases.

As the tumor grows, the following symptoms appear:

• Pain in the neck, throat.

• A seal on the neck.

• Difficulty swallowing food or saliva.

• Voice changes, hoarseness.

• Cough.

Is it possible to recover?

Thyroid cancer is usually very curable, especially if it is detected at an early stage. To detect the disease as early as possible, it is recommended that after 40 years a regular thyroid screening be performed. In the Israeli Oncological Hospital LISOD, such screening includes an ultrasound of the thyroid gland and a check of hormone levels.

If a densification is found in the thyroid gland according to the results of the examination, a fine needle biopsy from the pathological focus is performed to clarify the diagnosis.

If the presence of a carcinoma is confirmed, taking into account the type of tumor, stage, and general condition of the patient, a council of LISOD specialists will develop an individual treatment plan. Surgery, radiation, hormones, chemotherapy can be used. Effective methods selected for each specific case of the disease give high chances for a full recovery.
