Scientific Conference in LISOD - Innovations in Oncology From The World Leading Experts

August 22, 2016 - NEWS

The forum was attended by over 60 doctors from different cities of Ukraine. Presentations were made by world leading oncologists such as Joseph Gligorov, MD, president of the Mediterranean Association of Oncology, head of clinical oncology at Tenon Hospital (Paris, France), and member of the French Cancer Society (SFC); Abraham Kuten, Israeli oncologist, professor, leader in discoveries in radiation therapy and new methods designer, author of numerous medical textbooks, and member of European, Israeli and American professional associations.

The speakers focused mainly on immunotherapy as the future of oncological science. Today, immunotherapy is one of the most modern methods of treating a variety of malignant diseases. The method is based on the use of the latest developments of genetic engineering and molecular physics: with the help of specially developed biological agents, the immune system in the patient is activated, and thus begins a fight with the tumour. "If the human body itself cannot produce the required antibodies, it is necessary to develop them in the laboratory and implement them in an organism. We already have good results in breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and some rare types of cancer. More and more possibilities appear in the treatment of such dangerous diseases as melanoma. Not long ago, a person with this diagnosis would die within a few years, but now there are options for significant prolongation of life for these patients ", Joseph Gligorov explains.

The speakers stressed that the main task for both the doctors and scientists is to make cancer into a chronic disease. As an example, the speakers discussed diabetes, in which people take drugs and live life as usual. "We are now on the threshold of dramatic events, significant changes in oncological science. More and more medicines appear to significantly inhibit the development of a number of malignant tumours. Thanks to new medications that are now under development, even if we cannot achieve a full recovery of the patient, we will be able to keep the disease in a chronic form", explains Professor Abraham Kuten, a leading clinical oncologist of LISOD.

Joseph Gligorov devoted part of his speech to the newest targeted agents - medications acting specifically on cancer cells. In his report, he gave information about modern methods of radiotherapy as an alternative to surgery as well. The conference ended with a live, open professional discussion. Oncologists known worldwide answered any questions participants of the forum had and discussed the problems raised in the reports.

Professor Kuten noted the great importance of the conference for Ukrainian colleagues. "We will continue to develop such projects at LISOD. This conference was the first in a series of forums in which the leaders of oncology world will be invited to. Ukrainian experts will be able to listen to their reports, participate in discussions and share experiences. We are ready not only to teach, but also to learn from colleagues. It is important that the new knowledge and experience of the doctors returns to patients with new effective treatments. I see this as the main role of the educational activities ran by The Hospital of Israeli Oncology", says Abraham Kuten.
