Medicine of the future - in daily practice

June 18, 2019

Many years ago, doctors noticed: patients with the same diagnosis and stage of the disease may react differently to the same therapy. Someone treatment helps and
shows excellent results and someone notes the deterioration of the condition and the progress of the disease. Why it happens?

Scientists have found that the reason lies in the differences in cancer cells in different patients. The study of the genetic characteristics of the tumor allows doctors to choose exactly those methods that are most likely to help cure a person. This approach to treatment is called personalized medicine.

In recent years, the efforts of researchers are aimed at finding new drugs that will specifically target a particular tumor, blocking its receptors, restricting nutrition and leading to the death of malignant cells. And in this direction there is significant success. There are already drugs that can effectively treat some pathologies (breast cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, kidney cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, etc.) based on their genetic profile. In addition, special tests have been developed that show to
which kind of chemotherapy the tumor cells are most sensitive.

In the Israeli Oncology Hospital LISOD, a personalized approach to treatment is necessarily embodied in an individual treatment plan for each patient. The study of
the tumor, its features and receptors is given the most careful attention, because such a study is the basis for the appointment of further treatment.

For us, personalized treatment is an opportunity to offer each patient exactly the treatment methods that can give the best results. Thanks to this approach, we know  exactly which medicine should be prescribed first of all, when to perform the surgery, whether it is worth applying chemotherapy. This is the medicine of the future, which is actively being introduced into our daily practice.
