Influenza and ARVI: how to protect yourself?

January 13, 2020

What are the viruses dangerous with?

If a person is diagnosed with cancer, his immune system is in incredible tension - all the forces are directed to fight against malignant neoplasm, "mitigation" of the effects of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Therefore, another “enemy”, even in the face of a common cold, can lead to the complete exclusion of immune defense. And when the body refuses to fight itself, it is extremely difficult to help. The more severe the stage of the oncological disease, the longer the body fights against viral diseases, the stronger the patient’s own immunity and the higher the likelihood of developing various complications. Thus, the best cure for colds and flu for cancer patients is their prevention. The main task of such patients is to take all measures so as not to get sick.

 Prevention

It is necessary to observe elementary rules, which differ little from the generally accepted measures for the prevention of colds and flu:

 * Avoid places of the massive gathering of people.

 * If someone close has “caught” the virus, you need to try as much as possible (or better -completely) to isolate yourself from communication with the patient until his full recovery

More often to be in the fresh air and ventilate the room.

 * Move more - of course, not enough to fall from fatigue, but moderate physical activity is useful to everyone at any age and in any condition.

 * Nutrition also plays an important role, it should be regular and proper: balanced, rich in proteins, fiber and vitamins.

 Ways of treatment

If you did not manage to avoid the disease, then the common recommendations for the people with the oncological diagnosis are the same as to all the patients.

 * First of all - bed rest, with the first symptoms of infection, you need to give your body the opportunity to relax, gather strength to fight viruses. Sometimes such rest is enough to recover in a few days.

 * Next recommendation:  plentiful warm drink.

 * With caution, cancer patients need to bring down the temperature. They often have reduced platelets, hemoglobin, and the risk of bleeding increases. In addition, such drugs can cause a number of side effects that are undesirable in tumors of various locations - from hepatotoxicity in various reactions from the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, you need to carefully read the instructions!

 Are vaccinations allowed?

Yes. Cancer patients may get the flu shot. However, it is not worth vaccinating during chemotherapy or radiotherapy; it is better to be vaccinated before or after treatment.

Of course, it is better to protect yourself in advance. Indeed, an “unplanned" virus can significantly affect the treatment schedule, surgery, chemotherapy or radiation will have to be postponed until recovery. And everyone knows that in oncology, the time factor often plays a decisive role.

 But!

It is important to understand that as the treatment of each patient requires an individual approach, so the vaccination in each case should be personalized and take into account the peculiarities of human health. In any case, before deciding on vaccination, you need to consult your treating oncologist.

Do not self-medicate in any case! There are no completely healthy people. In each patient, SARS, ARI or influenza develops against the background of other concomitant diseases and conditions. And oncological patients have much more. Therefore, only the qualified specialist can make the right decision and choose the treatment tactics.

Be attentive to your body, take care of prevention and do not forget that the best friend of any disease is boredom and depression. Therefore, find for yourself a source of positive thinking and good mood and be healthy!
