How Does Lifestyle Affect Your Risk of Getting Breast Cancer?

August 12, 2019

Let's look at what lifestyle factors can affect the risk of breast cancer.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol always increases the risk of breast cancer.

Firstly, it affects the hormonal background. The level of estrogen and other hormones rises, against which a tumor appears.

Secondly, alcohol is a recognized carcinogen. It causes damage to cells that can lead to cancer.

Physical activity

A healthy lifestyle and physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer.

This is because regular moderate exercise helps regulate hormone levels. There is also evidence that physical education (both before the disease and after diagnosis) increases survival in breast cancer.

Weight

Being overweight increases your risk of developing breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

Obesity is associated with an increase in insulin levels and an increase in the amount of hormones that stimulate the growth of cancer. Also, adipose tissue and inflammation in it can contribute to genetic changes in healthy cells.

Family history

Some genes (in particular BRCA1, BRCA2) increase the risk of disease. But such hereditary genetic factors are responsible for only 5-10% of all cases of breast cancer.

Breast-feeding

Breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer.

Nutrition

A diet with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains helps to maintain a healthy weight and, therefore, the risk of breast cancer is reduced.

Important to remember!

Breast cancer is treatable today. If the disease is detected at an early stage, then 98% of women will be able to recover completely. Do not forget to regularly undergo screening examinations (ultrasound up to 40 years and mammography after 40 years), thanks to which cancer can be diagnosed in a timely manner.

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have suspicious lumps in your chest, contact your LISOD Clinical Oncologist. Treatment will be prescribed in accordance with international protocols and taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient and her tumor. Oncoplastic surgery allows not only to remove the cancer, but also to maintain the attractiveness of women.
