Hospital of Israeli Oncology Conducted The Scientific Conference Dedicated to Innovations in PET Technologies

April 3, 2017 - NEWS

The conference, with the participation of Einat Even-Sapir, professor of the National University in Tel Aviv (Israel), gathered more than 80 specialists from Kiev, Kharkov, Vinnitsa and other Ukrainian cities. In the report "The Role of PET-CT in Oncology", Einat highlighted the main points of application of PET-technologies, which make it possible to obtain maximum information about the tumour and, thus, increase the effectiveness of treatment. "Today we are moving to the era of theranostics," Professor Even-Sapir said, "when using specific isotopes we not only identify the disease, but also kill the cells of a malignant tumour. In Israel, we use theranostics for the treatment of thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, and prostate cancer. With regard to PET imaging, the use of this technology gives us the opportunity to accurately monitor the course of the disease. At any stage, we can make sure that the treatment we are conducting is effective."

According to the chief medical officer of LISOD, Professor Alla Vinnytska, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of the last conference for Ukrainian specialists who learned about the new possibilities of PET-technologies, both for establishing a primary diagnosis and for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment. "Neither computed tomography, nor magnetic resonance imaging gives such a full picture, as PET gives", explained Alla Vinnytska.

The most important thing is that holding such serious medical conferences always expands the possibilities for patients. It is on the basis of discussios of reports and scientific discussions that fully fledged researches appear and new directions in medicine are opened, which then return to patients with new effective methods of treatment. After all, the use of PET scans in Ukraine seemed to be a distant future quite recently, and today a PET-CT scan is performed at the Israeli Oncology Hospital as a standard for 65% of types of cancer.

"We serve as a centre where knowledge spreads, and where many doctors receive information about new methods of diagnosing and treating cancer," said LISOD leading oncologist, Professor Abraham Kuten.
