Endometrial Cancer: Major Risks and Symptoms

June 4, 2019

Endometrial cancer is also called uterine cancer. This is a cancer in which atypical cells appear in the inner layer of the uterus.

Facts

In most cases, the disease develops in postmenopausal women (45-75 years old). Due to a mutation in the DNA structure of the endometrium, the cells begin to divide uncontrollably, and a tumor appears. Over time, if untreated, the neoplasm extends beyond the inner lining of the uterus, invading the muscular layer and affecting the pelvic organs. With the flow of blood and lymph, cancer cells can spread throughout the body, causing the appearance of distant metastases.

Symptoms and signs

Uterine bleeding is the main symptom of endometrial cancer. Also, the discharge can be scanty, streaked with blood, with mucus. In women of reproductive age, heavy menstruation or intermenstrual bleeding is observed. There is pain in the abdomen, discomfort during sex, you may experience discomfort when urinating. In the later stages, back and leg pain may be added.

Risk factors

There is a set of factors that increase the probability of pathology, among them: the early appearance os menstruation (before 12), late menopause, absence of childbirth, diabetes, obesity, hormone replacement therapy with estrogen, the use of tamoxifen.

Diagnostics

With appearance of any unusual discharge, intermenstrual bleedings or bleedings in menopause it is obligatory to visit gynecologist. PAP-test is not informative for diagnostics of endometrial cancer. USI is obligatory performed. Diagnosis is set by the results of endometrial biopsy. If histology confirms cancer pathology, then for theevaluation of the spread of the disease CT, MRI, PET-CT, colonoscopy may be prescribed.

Treatment

In the early stages the disease may be surgically cured – uterus, ovaries, uterine tubes, pelvic lymph nodes are removed. At 3-4 stage, a distant radiotherapy and brachytherapy are prescribed, and chemotherapy, targeted and immunotherapy can also be used. In some cases, hormone therapy is prescribed.
