The famous scientist, Israeli clinical oncologist, chairman of the Israel Cancer Association, member of the executive board of AROME, head of the board of consultants of the Israeli Oncology Hospital LISOD, Professor Abraham Kuten, tells about whether it is possible to replace brachytherapy with remote irradiation, and about the features of the method:
— Today, many cases of cervical cancer can be completely cured. But at the same time, it is imperative to use two types of radiation therapy - both remote (on a linear accelerator) and brachytherapy. Let me emphasize: brachytherapy cannot be replaced by several sessions of remote irradiation - it is critically important to apply both types of treatment.
External beam radiation therapy directs radiation to a wide field: the tumor and potential sites for cancer spreading, such as lymph nodes. Brachytherapy is a technique that uses a small-sized radiation source that is placed directly into the tumor. Thus, high doses of radiation enter the neoplasm, while healthy organs practically do not experience a negative effect.
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that brachytherapy as a method of treatment has been used for more than 100 years — since the beginning of the last century. Of course, during this time, the technology has improved significantly and has become much more efficient.
Brachytherapy is a curative treatment that leads to recovery. This is an independent method, you should not take it only as an addition to surgery, etc. But it must be taken into account: with the correct conduct and calculations, brachytherapy promotes recovery, at the same time, if errors in planning or applying treatment techniques, it can lead to serious side effects and does not allow achieving a successful result. A lot here depends on the knowledge and experience of the team of specialists who carry out the irradiation.
Does brachytherapy hurt? It depends on where the treatment is taking place. For example, here in Israel and also in the Israeli Oncological Hospital LISOD, the treatment process is accurate, high-quality and comfortable for women thanks to the use of modern technologies. Brachytherapy does not cause painful sensations, except that sometimes there is a slight discomfort.
Treatment takes place on an outpatient basis. After several sessions of distance therapy, the patient comes to brachytherapy. Using a special device, a radiation source with a very high dose is injected into the tumor for several minutes. This procedure has nothing to do with how the treatment was carried out in the past — when the patient had to be in one position for a long time, anesthesia was applied, it was painful and unpleasant. But such sensations are already history, which has no place in the present. Now this treatment is passing quickly, and we are doing everything possible to make the woman feel comfortable.
